Comings and Goings

By Kristin Smith, Statewide Educator, The Big Picture

It’s been a busy November for the Education staff at the North Carolina Museum of Art. We spent the first weekend in Asheville at the North Carolina Art Education Association Professional Development Conference. The weather was gorgeous and participating teachers were motivated and inspiring.  Museum educators from our Teen Programs, Pre-K Programs, and The Big Picture K-12 Educator Enrichment Program shared ideas and resources with workshop attendees to enhance their professional practice. It was such a pleasure to be surrounded by colleagues and peers all working towards the same goal.

Then we all headed back to Raleigh to host the annual Fall Educator Expo at the museum, focused on the ideas of perception in art and thinking. Over 190 teachers attend from surrounding counties were treated to wine and hors d’oeuvres, a peek at our special exhibition Still Life Masterpieces as well as inspiring workshops and speakers.

And here’s the great thing…if you attended one of these events and thought to yourself “I wish there was more time to explore these ideas and resources” or “I wish some of my colleagues had been here to see and hear this” or maybe you couldn’t make it, the museum can help you out! Our new Statewide Educator, Kristin Smith, is ready and excited to come to your school, county or region and lead professional development sessions focused on Visual Literacy, Art and the Common Core, Easy Object-Based Discussion Strategies, Connecting Classrooms through Art and Concepts or Team Planning. Contact Kristin at to begin planning a great opportunity for your school.
